Occasionally, a large, deep cavity or crack can cause infection in the tooth's pulp. If not treated, the infection may spread, causing the bone to erode and form pockets of pus. This condition is known as an abcess and can be quite painful. In order to save the tooth from extraction, a root canal treatment may be necessary.
Done under local anesthetic, root canal therapy is painless and can be completed in one visit. If the tooth is extremely weak, a titanium post is inserted into the canal filling to reinforce the tooth and a crown is applied over the tooth to strengthen its structure and restore a natural appearance. If a crown is necessary, a second visit is required to place the permanent crown.
